Generative AI represents the latest transformative tool in human history. Like its predecessors, GenAI offers immense potential benefits: enhances problem-solving capabilities and management, augments many human endeavours and accelerates innovation. It also comes with it’s baggage of ethical dilemmas and dangers.
The Inevitability of Technological Progress
A managerial axiom states that if a technology can be developed, it will be, and once developed, it will be used. This principle applies to GenAI as well. Rather than attempting to curb its development, it is more prudent for ethically-minded individuals to guide its progress and implementation.
Uncertainty and it’s societal consequences
GenAI is also heralded as a work efficiency booster, threatening to eradicate a long list of roles/positions and allowing the emergence of a few new ones. This Singularity, will introduce a lot of turmoil and high anxiety. This will dissolve existing identities while enabling the emergence of new ones. One of GenAI’s most significant contribution to human thinking may be its emphasis on the importance of asking well though questions and considering context. As Thomas Pynchon noted, “If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t have to worry about answers.” Similarly, Jorge Wagensberg observed that “Changing the answers is an evolution, changing the questions is a revolution.” In the area of Questioning, managers are beginning to introduce Hypothesizing a tool to add pertinent questions to projects to magnify and guide learning from the project.
